What to Expect If You Have Not Been to the Dentist in Years

0

If you have not been to the dentist in years, you are not alone. It is not uncommon for people to be regular for their dental appointments, then stop going all of a sudden. According to the American Dental Associated (ADA), only 58% of the American population visits dentists once a year, meaning the rest of them do not visit for a year or longer.

The reason why people avoid the dentist may vary, but it is never too late to start again. When you decide to book a dental appointment after years, you may have questions. If you have not been to the dentist in a while, there are a few things you should expect and prepare for. Book an appointment with a Wichita Falls dental practice today.

What to expect if you have not been to the dentist in years

  • The appointment may take a while.

If you are going to your first dental appointment after years, expect to sit at the clinic for a long time. Since it has been quite a while, your dentist will require your updated medical history and paperwork. Your dental check-ups and cleanings will be thorough and take more time than usual. The hygienist or dentist will also require time to familiarise themselves with your case.

  • Mild gum bleeding.

Since you have not been to the dentist in years, you are expected to experience some gum bleeding while the hygienist cleans your teeth and gums. While it may not be normal or healthy, gum bleeding while dental cleaning is not something of concern. Sometimes gums bleed when they are not used to flossing. The more you floss regularly, the less likely you will bleed.

However, gum bleeding can sometimes be a sign of periodontal disease, in which case the dentist will inform you.

  • Comprehensive oral exam.

Once the hygienist has cleaned your teeth of food particles, tartar, or plaque, they will assess your mouth for periodontal diseases, cavities, and other dental issues. Another crucial element is to check for oral cancer. A year or more is enough to develop oral cancer. If you have not seen your dentist for at least 18 months, be ready for a lengthy and thorough examination.

  • X-rays.

Dentists typically recommend a set of X-rays for patients who have not been to their dental appointments in years. X-rays are the only way to see minute chips or cracks that may have developed over the years. If you wait for the problem to get big enough to see it with your naked eyes, you may have to undergo a more extensive treatment process.
