But did you know that the blood of your little one’s umbilical cord can be a lifesaving option for your entire family? The umbilical cord connects the fetus to the mother while in the womb. Earlier, doctors used to throw it away at the time of the birth but now many parents look for the blood of the umbilical cord for the future health of their baby.

Uses of Umbilical cords

The fluid in the umbilical cord loads several stem cells. These cells can treat blood diseases, including anemia and cancer. They can also work for several immune system disorders, which cause a disturbance in the human body, making it unable to defend itself against illnesses.  

Collecting fluid from the umbilical cord is an easy process. It gives ten times more stem cells than bone marrow can. Stem cells obtained from cord blood have rare infectious diseases. They have less chance of rejection than adult stem cells.

How to Get Stem Cells

If you want to store the blood from your baby’s umbilical cord when they come into the world, ask your doctor to initiate the process. The doctor will clamp the umbilical cord in two parts and cut the cord to separate the baby from the mother.

The doctor will then insert a needle in the umbilical cord and collect at least 40mm of blood from it. They will then seal the blood in a bag and send it to a cord blood bank or lab for testing and subsequent storage. It is a painless process, which hardly takes only a few minutes to complete.
